“Vorwärtstasten”

The artwork “Vorwärtsstasten” by Wolfgang Bier (1943–1998) is composed of iron and bronze parts. It shows a male figure moving his left foot forwards. It looks as if he is taking a step. However, the figure does not appear energetic, but rather cautious and tentative. It has no arms and its face shows hardly any emotion.
In 1991, the cultural office, a gallery and some private individuals organised the “Skulpturenpfad” [sculpture trail] in the old town of Osnabrück. There were a total of 23 works of art along the sculpture trail. It led from the Kunsthalle via the Hegertorviertel to the Museumsquartier. The aim was to familiarise people with modern sculpture.
3 of these artworks were later permanently installed in public spaces. This work is one of them.
Other works from the project are “ Großer sitzender weiblicher Torso” and “Großer Nagelkopf”. Both are located at the Kunsthalle.
