Art in Public Spaces in Osnabrück

The Kunsthalle Osnabrück currently takes care of 38 works of art.
All of these works were installed in the city between 1950 and 2010. Most of them were placed in the historic city centre. Some are also located in the outer districts of the city. 26 artists and 2 female artists created them. The works differ greatly in their artistic design. In other words, they are made of very different materials. And the material was processed in very different ways. The themes they want to address are also very different. Some deal with the human body. Some investigate how light behaves. Or a particular material. Others explore topics such as peace and tolerance. Or they commemorate special events in the history of Osnabrück

A collection is always the product of its time. This means that different works of art are selected for a collection today than in 1950, and each generation poses its own questions to the works of art. This is why a collection is never complete or fully finished. And that is why we keep asking: What condition are the works of art in? But most importantly: How can they be made more visible again in our time? How can they give us cause for dialogue and address current issues?
