“Time is turning”

The artwork is called “Time is turning”. With a weight of around 90 tonnes and a height of 5 metres, the work is one of the largest pieces of public art in Osnabrück. The artist Hans-Jürgen Breuste (1933–2012) has arranged a total of 11 ship’s crankshafts made of solid steel on several steel girders. They come from the Klöckner steelworks. The steelworks were a major employer in the area until their closure. The title refers to the changes of the 1990s, from an industrial society to a service society. [This means that fewer and fewer people worked in factories where things were manufactured. There were major changes in the area of labour during this time]. The artwork has been controversial ever since it was installed. Even back then, the residents of the square felt that they were not involved enough in the project.
