Heike Maria Unvorstellbar
“Wie heran an die Hoffnung mit der aufsteigenden Zeit im Nacken?”
The artist Heike Maria Unvorstellbar (*1959) created a four-part mural on the side wall of a residential building with the title “Wie heran an die Hoffnung mit der aufsteigenden Zeit im Nacken”. The house is adjacent to the site of the old synagogue. It was burnt down and demolished during the November pogroms of 1938. [Many synagogues and Jewish businesses were destroyed during the November pogroms. And there was violence against Jewish people all over Germany].
The mural consists of 4 narrow panels painted almost identically. At the bottom is the question of the title, How to approach hope with rising time breathing down your neck?, from which a kind of path winds its way upwards, past cryptic symbols and signs, to an oval shape in which is written: “and yet strange faces often force their way into our lives like a mask”.
A version of the artwork painted on canvas can be borrowed from the Kunsthalle’s Artothek. [An Artothek is like a library, but for works of art. So people can enjoy art at home for a while without having to buy it].
