“Die Verspottung”

There is a large mural on the wall of a house in Mühlenstraße. It is called “Die Verspottung” and shows a street scene between houses. A man is standing in the centre of the picture. He is only wearing a pair of underpants. He is surrounded and harassed by three other people. A sign hangs around his neck. The sign reads “INRI”. This means “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”
in Latin. One of the people in the picture is filming the situation.
Axel Gundrum (*1953) has used quotations from other works of art in this picture. For example, the houses in the background look similar to those in the painting “Die Verdammten” by Felix Nussbaum.
At the back left of the picture, he has painted the remains of a house. This house was destroyed in an arson attack by right-wing extremists in Solingen in 1993. Five people died in the attack.
The mural nearby is called “Hexenwahn” and was also painted by Axel Gundrum.
